Mercer’s commitment to our environment starts close to home. An example is sending all unused vinyl from production off to Northwest Polymers where the material is ground into pellets that can be re-used in all sorts of products.
Recently, David & Scott Mercer met with Mark Shuholm, owner of Northwest Polymer. Located in Mollala, OR, waste vinyl and plastic products are processed into reusable pellets that are turned into new vinyl window frames, composite decking, fence panels, all sorts of products with material that would otherwise be in a landfill.
In 2007, as part of Mercer's proactive approach to recycling and caring for the environment, Mercer Windows contacted the City of Beaverton's Recycle At Work staff for assistance. Recycle At Work staff met with Mercer Windows to review production samples and offered waste reduction recommendations. Employing those recommendations into their production area enabled Mercer Windows to cut their garbage volume by 34% in the first six months.
Further efforts at Mercer have been taken to reduce the amount of silt and glass that enters storm water drains. This was accomplished by installing filters that catch the materials before entering neighboring Fanno Creek.
“Mercer employees have great pride helping keep Mother Nature healthy. Each day, employees are proving a local manufacturer can economically recycle virtually every by-product” Hank Serat, Plant Manager, Mercer Windows.
